The story behind the art
In Judges chapter 7, Gideon musters thirty-two thousand men and God tells him it is too many. He sends them home in stages until three hundred remain. They surround the camp at night with trumpets and torches hidden inside clay jars, break the jars all at once, and the light and noise rout an army they never had to fight. The canvas is the moment the jars break.
