What size canvas is best for a living room?
For most living rooms, the right canvas above a sofa is 24x36 inches (landscape) or 30x40 inches if the sofa is over 84 inches wide. The rule professional decorators use: the artwork should be roughly two-thirds the width of the sofa beneath it, hung 6-10 inches above the back cushions.
Living room canvas sizing is the question we get asked most often by customers ordering above-sofa pieces, and it's the easiest one to get wrong because what looks right on a product page rarely matches what fills the wall in person. The most common mistake is buying too small โ a 16x20 canvas above a standard 7-foot sofa reads as a postcard. The second most common mistake is buying too large for a narrow wall and ending up with art that competes with picture-window light or window trim. The two-thirds rule, with real numbers
Measure your sofa width in inches. Multiply by 0.66. That number is the minimum artwork width you should hang above it. A 72-inch loveseat needs at least a 48-inch-wide piece (either one 24x36 landscape rotated, or two 18x24 portraits as a pair). An 84-inch standard sofa needs at least 55 inches of artwork โ a single 30x40 lands cleanly, or a 24x36 plus a smaller flanking piece. A 96-inch sectional needs 63+ inches โ here you'd run a 36x48 or a triptych of three 18x24s.
If you're hanging a single statement canvas (the most common AmourPrint living-room order), 24x36 landscape is the most-ordered size for a reason: it fits sofas from 72 to 90 inches wide, which is the bulk of US living-room furniture.
Hanging height and spacing
The center of the canvas should sit 57-60 inches from the floor in galleries, but above a sofa the rule shifts: the bottom edge of the canvas should be 6-10 inches above the back of the sofa cushions. This is closer than people think. The visual effect of leaving 14+ inches of empty wall between sofa and art is that the art looks like it's floating away from the furniture. Tighter spacing reads as intentional grouping.
If you have a tall sofa (60+ inch back), reduce to 4-6 inches of clearance. If you have a low mid-century sofa (28-32 inch back), you can stretch to 10-12 inches of clearance and the eye still reads the art as part of the same composition.
Canvas vs. framed print vs. multi-panel โ which works in a living room
Single large canvas is the safest move for a living room and the choice 70% of our living-room customers make. If your living room is more traditional, add a floater frame or pick a framed print instead. Multi-panel pieces (diptychs and triptychs) work well above wider sofas and sectionals but require precise hanging โ a half-inch off on spacing reads as sloppy. Single-canvas is forgiving; multi-panel is not.
